The Hanson Board of Health, seeks proposals to load, transport and otherwise manage and/or process leaf and yard wastes collected at the Hanson Transfer Station at a properly licensed or permitted off-site location.

The Town-owned parcel of land is the site of the Hanson Solid Waste Transfer Station located at 201 Franklin Street in Hanson, Massachusetts and is shown on Assessors Map 45 as Lot 9A, and contains +/- 3.84 acres.

Hanson Water is SAFE to Drink

and will remain off line for a few weeks until the matter is resolved.

We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants to ensure the safety of the water supply. On September 14, 2011 our water system was notified that a water sample collected on September 13, 2011 from Hanson Well #1 (located off of Main Street) tested positive for Total Coliform and E.coli, which is a fecal indicator. Fecal indicators are used to detect ground water sources that may be susceptible to fecal contamination which may contain harmful viruses or bacteria.

The water delivered to your taps through the distribution system is disinfected with chlorine to kill viruses and bacteria, including E.coli. It is important to note that samples collected on September 13, 2011 in the distribution system did NOT detect any fecal contaminants.

This source is one of four active wells that supplies drinking water to our system. In accordance with the federal Ground Water Rule (GWR) requirements, we are notifying you of the situation and conducting additional sampling to evaluate the extent of potential fecal contamination and will take further actions as necessary.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

This is not an emergency, you do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions at this time.

The USEPA requires us to provide you with this notice and the following information on fecal indicators: "Fecal indicators are microbes whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems." These symptoms can also be caused by issues unrelated to drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, or, if you have specific health concerns, you may want to discuss such concerns with your doctor. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 or online at http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants/basicinformation/pathogens.cfm.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

WHAT IS BEING DONE?

We continue to maintain chlorine levels throughout our system and monitor for the presence of fecal contaminants in the sources and distribution system to ensure the safety of the water supply. In addition, Well #1 was taken off line on September 14, 2011 immediately after we were notified of the contamination.

Our system is undergoing repeat testing and evaluation to determine if the current level of treatment is adequate or if additional corrective actions are necessary to reduce the risk of potential fecal contamination in our drinking water supply. Some consumers may notice a slight discoloration or odor/taste in the water, as the disinfection level of chlorine has been temporarily increased until the investigation is complete.

We are in contact with MassDEP during this process. They will evaluate the effectiveness of the steps taken and determine if any further action is required. If necessary, you will be notified again if you need to take any corrective actions. This notice does not affect persons using private drinking water wells.

The Hanson Water Department has issued a “Drinking Water Notice” for all town residents, due to a detection of E-Coli in one of the town’s raw water wells.

During a routine test of the drinking water supply a sample taken from Hanson’s Well #1, located off Main Street, on Tuesday, Sept. 13 contained indicators of the fecal substance E-Coli, according to the Hanson Water Dept.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the contaminated Well was taken off line and will not return unless and until approved by the MassDEP
According to the water department, none of the water samples from the town distribution system (those delivered to resident homes) tested positive for E-Coli. Only the untreated sample from Well #1 tested positive.
The town Water Department did want to make it clear that this is not an emergency situation and that residents “do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions.”

There will be an informational meeting with The Massachusetts Department of Public Health, The Plymouth County Mosquito Control Program, state legislators, public safety officials, and the Hanson Board of Health on Thursday evening
September 15, 2011 at 7:00PM at the Whitman Hanson Regional School regarding the presence of birds and mosquitoes that are infected with Eastern Equine Enchephalitis.

Hanson has been notified by the Dept. of Public Health that mosquitoes carrying the EEE virus have been trapped in Hanson and the DEP has placed Hanson on the moderate risk level. Good Afternoon.......this is the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District with an important message. For the past several weeks, our administrative team has been proactive about the issue of mosquito born diseases and the possible risk to our students and community members. We met with Plymouth County official Dan Daley on Thursday and that time we were informed that Whitman-Hanson Regional High School was in a low risk area. However, this afternoon the Department of Public health informed the Hanson board of health that two mosquitoes, one which is mammal biting, tested positive for Triple E. After consulting with a Hanson Board of Health official, we have determined that the most prudent course of action would be to postpone tonight's football game until tomorrow at 4pm. On September 24th, 2011 from 11-3, the Whitman Hanson Education Foundation ( a non-profit organization that raises funds for grants to the Whitman-Hanson schools) will be holding its fifth Kids Fitness Festival at the Whitman Hanson Regional High School. The focus of this festival will be on presenting children with healthy food choices, non-electronic activities and exercise so that they can incorporate these into their daily lives. Some of the activities last year included: karate demonstrations, origami, stamping, face painting, several obstacle courses, dancing demonstrations, bungee racing, etc.,.. Participants were also offered free milk, juice, pretzels, popcorn, fruit, fruit kabobs, granola, water and much more. The cost is $3 per person which includes all activities and foods.

The first day of school, for all students in grades PK through 12 will be on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. We have been in close communication with officials from both Whitman and Hanson as we make decisions regarding student safety and the restoration of power to our communities. Public safety officials have asked us to remind all community members to avoid touching any wires which may be down on streets and yards.

As of noon on Aug 30, 2011, the high school building still does not have power. Power has been restored to our other facilities.

Many of our back to school programs have been moved to Tuesday, September 6, 2011. The following events will be held:

> Open House for all Conley School, Duval School, Indian Head School and Maquan School will be from 4:30 to 6:00pm.

> Kindergarten orientation from 4:30 to 6:00pm.

            There will be two sessions, one at 4:30pm and one at 5:30pm.

            All students scheduled for the AM kindergarten session should plan to attend the 4:30pm orientation.

Duval Elementary School's "Back to School" barbeque will be from 4pm to 6:30pm.

National Grid is working to restore power. As of 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 29th over 300,000 National Grid customers were without power. IT'S HURRICANE SEASON: DEVELOP A DISASTER PLAN NOW

Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. Where will your family be when a disaster strikes? They could be anywhere – at work, at school or in the car. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children are safe?

Before the Storm – Plan, Prepare, Practice

! Devise a Plan – all the steps you and your family will need to take to prepare for a severe weather emergency that may require evacuation.

! Decide to Evacuate or Stay Secure at Home – if you live along the coast, in a mobile home park or in a high-rise apartment building, you will most likely evacuate in the event of a hurricane. Identify ahead of time where you will go, choosing several places, such as a friend's home in another city, a motel or a shelter. Keep the telephone numbers of these places handy as well as a road map. You might need to take alternate or unfamiliar routes if major roads are closed or clogged.

! Find a Secure Interior Location in Your Home – if you decide not to evacuate, identify an interior, first-floor room with no windows, like a bathroom or closet. This will protect your family from severe winds.

! Get Information about Shelters – find out where shelters are in your area and learn their locations. A list of Red Cross hurricane and disaster shelters in Duval County can be found on the Northeast Florida Chapter Web site at www.nefloridaredcross.org.

! Prepare for Pets – pets are not allowed in Red Cross shelters and most hotels and motels, so decide where to go with your pet or find a safe location in your home to leave your pet with an adequate supply of food and water. For a listing of pet-friendly hotels, visit www.petswelcome.com.

! Learn Evacuation Routes and Practice Them – be sure to make allowances for traffic and decide how long it will take to get to your final destination.

! Plan for Senior Citizens and People with Special Needs – help relatives and neighbors who are older or have special needs plan what they will do in the event of a disaster. Their situations are unique and may require special transportation and sheltering. You can also help them register with JEA so their utilities are flagged for priority restoration after the storm.

! Check Disaster Plans for Work and School – ask your workplace and your children's school if they have a disaster plan and if you can read it. Find out if you are an essential employee at work and what your responsibilities will be.

! 40% of Small Businesses Close – many small businesses are forced to close and never reopen after a major disaster because they had no plan or backup systems.

! Check Insurance Coverage for Flood and Wind – homeowners insurance typically does not include this type of coverage, but flood insurance is available to protect homes, apartments, condominiums and nonresidential structures. It is advisable to get flood insurance even if your home is in a low or moderate flood risk zone.

! Inventory Household Items with Photographs – this helps when filing insurance claims. Videotape is another option, but insurance companies prefer photographs.

! Assemble a Disaster Supply Kit – store the kit in a large, watertight container.

" Water – at least one gallon per person per day for three to five days

" Salt, pepper and sugar

" Peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars and nuts

" Important papers, such as insurance policies, wills, identification (driver's license, credit card, social security cards) and household inventory

! Property – Measure your windows and purchase pre-cut plywood to cover them. Get exterior, half-inch thick CDX grade plywood, which can withstand winds up to 150 miles per hour. If possible, leave at least four inches of overlap on all sides of the window and use 1 ½ inch screws to attach the plywood to your home. For wood homes and mobile homes, screw the plywood directly to the home. For brick or block homes, pre-drill a hole into the mortar joint (the cement between the bricks or blocks) and insert a one-inch lead anchor into the hole. Screw 1 ½-inch screws into the anchors, spaced 18 inches apart. Don't forget sliding glass doors as well. Also pay attention to ways you can reinforce exterior and garage doors and your roof. You may need to install horizontal bracing onto the panels of your garage door and hurricane straps for your roof. Contact the Northeast Florida Chapter and ask for the brochure Against the Wind: Protecting your Home from Hurricane Damage for more information.

! Write It Down – put your plan in writing and include important phone numbers, such as an out-of-town contact person in case your family is separated who can ask as a communication link, schools, insurance companies and emergency contacts and phone numbers.

! Put Plan and Travel Maps in Kit – Store your plan with your disaster supplies kit and include travel maps. Make sure to check your kit at least twice a year, once just before hurricane season, and replace items as needed.

During the Storm – Watches and Warnings

! After a Watch is Issued – Check Kit, Flashlights, Portable Radio, Cell Phone Chargers, Extra Batteries, Portable TV

" What is a Watch? – A hurricane or hurricane conditions may threaten your specific area within 36 hours.

! Monitor Local Media

! Collect Valuables and Personal Effects

! Get Gas, Secure Yard Items

! Prepare Windows, Reinforce Doors, Inspect Mobile Home Tie-Downs, Get Cash

! Check Prescription Medication, Call out-of-town contact

! After a Warning is Issued – Take immediate action

" What is a Warning? – Expect winds at least 74 miles an hour or dangerously high water and rough seas within 24 hours.

! Close and Cover Windows and Glass Stay Clear of Windows

! Turn Refrigerator and Freezer To Coldest Settings

! Store Water in Clean Containers

! Unplug Major Appliances

! Go to the Designated Safe Place Take Disaster Kit Evacuate If Told To By Local Authorities

! Keep Generator Outside Home – the exhaust from generators contains lethal carbon monoxide

! Connect Appliances to Generator and Do Not Plug into Breaker – plugging the generator into your circuit breaker might cause electricity to flow out of your home into JEA's electric grid, which could injure or kill an unsuspecting utility worker trying to restore power.

! Use a Licensed Contractor for All Connections

! Use Flashlights Instead of Candles – candles are a fire hazard, so flashlights are safer when illuminating dark rooms.

! Do Not Touch Fallen Power Lines – also avoid anything or anyone in contact with power lines, including standing water, which could be charged from underground or downed power lines.

! Avoid Transformer Boxes

! Flooding may contain Sewage

! Turn on Only Necessary Items First, One at a Time – this will prevent overloading the system.

! Keep Electric Appliances away From Water

! Use Safety Equipment and Caution Hire Professionals

! Conserve Water

! Boil Water – water needs to be treated only if it is of questionable purity. Boiling is the safest method of treating water. First, strain water through a clean cloth to remove bulk impurities. Then bring the water to a rolling boil for about one minute and allow it to cool before drinking. Boiled water will taste better if you put oxygen back into it by pouring the water back and forth between two clean containers. This will also improve the taste of stored water.

MEMA ADVISES CAUTION DURING THIS EXTREMELY HOT WEATHER

With the extremely hot weather the Commonwealth is experiencing, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is advising people to be cautious and is offering some tips to help keep cool and safe.~

"A few common sense measures can reduce heat-related problems, especially for the elderly, the very young and people with respiratory ailments, who are more susceptible to the effects of high temperatures," said MEMA Director Kurt Schwartz. "Here are some tips to follow to stay safe during this hot, humid weather."

Slow down, avoid strenuous activity.~ Do not try to do too much on a hot day.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.~ Light colors will reflect heat and sunlight and help maintain normal body temperature. Protect your face with a wide-brimmed hat.

Drink plenty of water regularly and often, even if you do not feel thirsty. Attempt to stay hydrated.

Limit intake of alcoholic beverages.~ They can actually dehydrate your body.

Eat well-balanced, light, regular meals.~ Avoid high protein foods that increase metabolic heat.

Stay indoors as much as possible.~

If you do not have air conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun.~ Electric fans do not cool the air, but they do help evaporate perspiration, which cools your body.

Go to a place where you can get relief from the heat, such as air conditioned schools, libraries, theaters and other community facilities that may offer refuge during the warmest times of the day.

Check with your community for information about possible local 'cooling centers'. You may also want to call 2-1-1 for 'cooling center' information or go to www.mass211.org.

Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings or louvers.~ Outdoor awnings or louvers can reduce the heat that enters a home by up to 80%.

Avoid too much sunshine.~ Sunburn slows the skin's ability to cool itself.~ If you are outside, use sunscreen lotion with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating.

Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle.

Check on family, friends and neighbors.

In normal weather, the body's internal thermostat produces perspiration that evaporates and cools the body.~~However, in extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain normal temperature, which may lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.~ If you believe you, or anyone you are with, is experiencing a heat-related medical emergency, promptly call 911, and if possible, move to a cooler place.

On March 16th, 2011 the Hanson Community Preservation Committee will be holding its annual public Open Forum Meeting from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm at Hanson Town Hall. Committee members will be on hand to discuss the Community Preservation Act (CPA) and to review the deadlines and application process for the upcoming grant cycle. Potential grant applicants and the general public are encouraged to attend. This forum is a great opportunity to learn about CPA and the many ways it can be used to improve our town. The forum is also a meant to be a platform for providing feedback/suggestions to the Committee for future projects. We would love to hear from you!!! Do you have a group of people you really like to hang out with? Why not form a team and enter The Whitman-Hanson Education Foundation's Spelling Bee? On March 31st, 2011 from 6:30-9 PM the Whitman-Hanson Education Foundation will bee holding its first annual Adult Spelling Bee in the Whitman-Hanson Regional High School's Performing Arts Center. Businesses, PTOs, neighborhood and community groups, town and public safety organizations, are all encouraged to form teams of three to eight Spellers. Not comfortable getting in front of an audience and spelling? Not everyone on the team needs to bee a Speller.....you can designate one or more members of the team to spell and the other team members can help the Spellers and cheer them on!! Teams are encouraged to wear costumes and really get into the spirit!!! The entry fee for each team is $150 and is tax-deductible. Proceeds will fund grants in all of the Whitman Hanson schools for grades pre-K through High School.

If you know of a senior or infirmed person, who may need assistance during emergencies, please contact Mary Collins at the Hanson Senior Center 781-293-2683 x7.

The Hanson Senior Center maintains a list of persons who may be seniors, elderly, infirmed, homebound and/or frail to help the Town provide assistance to them during various emergencies, including snowstorms, to ensure that services may still provided to them as needed. This information becomes crucial during power outages where the need to have back up or emergency electricity may be required (such as in-home dialysis, etc.) or other needs medical needs (such as oxygen or other medicinal needs).

Thus, as a result of this seasons storms, and in an effort to assist the Senior Center's public outreach campaign, we are in the process of ensuring that our efforts with regard to providing assistance to these residents are met. Therefore, we are asking that if any resident who may fall into one of these categories (or if people know of Hanson residents that may need this type of assistance) could contact the Senior Center with their current contact information we would be most appreciative.

Any of the information provided is used for the sole purpose of making our Fire and Police personnel aware of potential needs that could arise in emergency situations.

SOUPER BOWL 2011- FEBRUARY 6, 2011

Join the friendly competition amongst the churches of the Cranberry Council as we raise money and collect food items for our local three food pantries – Pembroke, Hanson, and Halifax/Plympton. Last year we raised an amazing $6,511.00 and collected 2463 food items!!! What a great accomplishment. The Souper Bowl started in 1990 with a group of young people who wanted to celebrate more than a football game by raising up this prayer: "Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat." All donations must be made on Souper Bowl Sunday between 8am and 1pm.

Suspension of all Outdoor Recreational Activities Lifted

The Town of Hanson Board of Selectmen announced on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, that the suspension of all outdoor recreational activities has been lifted.
It is important for people to be aware that the risk level assessed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has not changed and even with the decrease in mosquito activity, this does not completely eliminate the possibility of being bitten by an infected mosquito.
Personal protection should still be applied when outdoor at peak mosquito hours.

On February 5th, 2011 from 5-9 PM the Whitman-Hanson Education Foundation will be holding its first annual Adult Spelling Bee in the Whitman-Hanson Regional High School's Performing Arts Center. We are hoping that this event will bring our diverse community together for a wonderful fundraising event. Businesses, PTOs, neighborhood and community groups, town and public safety organizations, are all encouraged to form teams and/or to sponsor teams of up to eight Spellers. Teams will compete against each other in "swarms" of up to eight teams. The winner of each swarm will then compete in the Championship Swarm. Teams can be sponsored by individuals, groups, and businesses. Sponsors can pull together their own team members or sponsor another group of individuals such as the Police Department or Fire Department, reading groups, neighborhood groups, sports groups, school groups, clergy, etc.,.. Competition will be intense to win the coveted Bee trophy as well as the prize for best costume.
The entry fee for each team is $150 and is tax-deductible. To enter, print and send an Adult Entry Form along with the entry fee to Whitman-Hanson Education Foundation , PO Box 270, Whitman, MA 02382.
